Sines, The Land of Vasco da Gama
Sailing in the wake of the great explorers the Rendez- vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta is the adventure of a lifetime – a 7,000 nautical mile transatlantic race visiting seven countries.
Sines is a municipality located exactly in the centre of the southwest coast of Portugal and historical birthplace of the navigator Vasco da Gama. Vasco da Gama was born in Sines, Portugal, around 1460. In 1497, he was commissioned by the Portuguese king to find a maritime route to the East. His success in doing so proved to be one of the more instrumental moments in the history of navigation.
Organised by Sail Training International, this epic event marks the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation.
APORVELA – Associação Portuguesa de Treino de Vela is working in partnership with the Municipality of Sines, in association with Sines & Algarve Ports Administration and Alentejo Regional Authority of Touris, to welcome this great adventure.
